  1. 1600-1681. Spanish dramatist and poet. After
  2. the death of Lope de Vega in 1635, he was
  3. considered to be the leading Spanish
  4. dramatist. Most celebrated of the 118 plays
  5. is the philosophical La Vida es sueno/Life is
  6. a Dream 1635. Born in Madrid, Calderon
  7. studied law at Salamanca (1613-19). In 1620
  8. and 1622 he was successful in poetry contests
  9. in Madrid; while still writing dramas, he
  10. served in the army in Milan and the
  11. Netherlands (1625-35). By 1636 his first
  12. volume of plays was published and he had been
  13. made master of the revels at the court of
  14. Philip IV, receiving a knighthood in 1637. In
  15. 1640 he assisted in the suppression of the
  16. Catalan rebellion. After the death of his
  17. mistress he became a Franciscan in 1650, was
  18. ordained in 1651, and appointed as a
  19. prebendary of Toledo in 1653. As honorary
  20. chaplain to the king in 1663, he produced
  21. outdoor religious plays for the festival of
  22. the Holy Eucharist. His works include the
  23. tragedies El pintor de su deshonra/The
  24. Painter of His Own Dishonour 1645, El Alcalde
  25. de Zalamea/The Mayor of Zalamea 1640, and El
  26. Medico de su honra/The Surgeon of His Honour
  27. 1635; the historical El Principe
  28. constante/The Constant Prince 1629; and the
  29. dashing intrigue La Dama duende/The Phantom
  30. Lady 1629.
